Decided to try a print ad in the MFM 2009 conbook.
Mostly did it because the ad was cheap, or at least cheaper than any other way to reach the con, and I'd already blown the deadline for advertising for Anthrocon...
The ad had to be B&W due to printing restrictions, so I went with a new piece done specifically for the ad (I hadn't started doing B&W pieces before now), without gradiations / halftones because I didn't want to leave any room for error up to the printer. I even included the artwork as an exclusive FREE desktop wallpaper, to help track the ad better...
... and got zero response.
I mean, I know it's hard to sell a color comic in a B&W ad, but CHRIST...
My main flaw putting this experiment together was that I was thinking that an experiment should actually produce data... so really, this is an example of an experiment with inconclusive data, not "negative" data.
Still, $40 out for the ad with nothing to show for it is pretty negative data anyway, so...
hmm....i wonder if a poster minus bottom part/modified bottom part, might be something to put up in a comic shop. mind if i take a copy of this (just printed on normal printer) to the local comic shop and ask if he'd put a bigger version up?

If you're going to do that, I'd rather send you a PDF version so it'll print properly.
Better yet, let's see who else responds so I can actually post a new (hopefully improved) version that would be more appropriate for a large printing situation.
luckily i have the attention of the guy who runs the shop (local place, no franchise) so i can usually talk him into at least taking a look. he won't think about ordering books yet cause of an ordering mixup with the people he already buys from, but i'm sure i can get him to at least put up a poster or have those advertising cards on the counter.
